Being Seen As Beautiful

Posted on December 10, 2015

In my last post, I wrote about reclaiming our humanity.  I think this video gives an interesting and sometimes inspiring look into the human condition.  High school student Shea Glover took film of her classmates with the explanation that she was taking picture of things she finds beautiful.  She indicated that her intent was not just to get their reactions, but “simply filming beauty.”  Take a look and see what you notice in their reactions.

What lessons can we take from this?

We have simultaneously a longing to be seen and a fear of being seen.  We hide to protect ourselves emotionally from the possibility of rejection.  At the same time, we long to be seen, valued, and accepted.  Feeling rejected is excruciating.  Feeling accepted is ecstatic.

This speaks to the power of affirming the people in your life.  Whatever happened yesterday, today is a new opportunity to recognize the beauty and the humanity of the those around you.  As the last young lady on the video exclaimed, “This is such a great day.”

Mother Teresa observed, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
